ZenChat / ZAP: Percussionist's choice
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:45:37 AM »
Hello Tribe!

Some days ago my ZAP arrived! It's a wonderful piece of craftsmanship and an eye catcher in my office. It nearly broke my heart that I had only a few hours to play it, last week, because I was busy with the CeBIT. But finally the weekend brought some free time and I spent every minute tapping on black plastics. ;-)

I actually use the ZAP with a MacBook + BFD2 and Garageband. I've tried several combinations of instruments an pad-setups and I like playing the drums with the ZAP. I'll have to find some good combinations for orchestral percussion, but I have found two really great jobs for the ZAP already: First it is the best MIDI controller to play steel drums. Look at them and look at a ZAP and you'll know what I mean. And second, I'm looking forward to the next rehearsal weekend with the symphonic orchestra. I play the timpani there and use four timpani in our rehearsal room, but can take only two of them with me, when we play outwards. I'm anxious to see the faces, when I bring the tiny ZAP instead of the huge two timpani and can play all the notes I have to play in any volume.

Just my first impressions - more whenever there is time! ;-)

A stupid question from Germany: Who will win the Superbowl on Sunday? I'll stay awake till Monday morning 4:00 AM to watch it.  ;)

Any suggestions?

ZenChat / Get Together in Germany? (MusikMesse Frankfurt)
« on: January 20, 2008, 04:16:14 PM »
Hey folks!

Is there anyone visiting the MusikMesse in Frankurt this year? If so: What do you think about a get together in march? I could look out for a location if you want. John, I didn't find fxpansion in the exhibitor list. Will you be there this year?

PS: Since yesterday my new ZAP in Bubinga is in production and I have this well known "Zendrum is on the way" feeling (the same I had after I ordered my ZX last year).  ;D

ZenChat / Drums and Percussion Group at Xing.com
« on: October 31, 2007, 02:30:13 PM »
Hello tribe!

Does anyone know Xing? It is an open business network and free. You can join the network, enter your contact data and search for other networkers. If you find a known contact, you can add him as your direct contacts and allow him to see selected fields of your contact data. You can also join groups, where you can find many other contacts with the same interests. Last week I started the group "drums and percussion" and would like to invite every zendrummer. Here is the link directly to the group:

Feel free to add me to your contacts: Simply click at my photo (next to "moderated by") and click "add as contact" after that. Let me know, that you are a zendrummer. ;-)

ZenChat / vZen for Windows - Beta testers wanted!
« on: April 13, 2007, 03:11:02 AM »
Hi folks!

Now I've been playing my Zendrum for some weeks and very early I didn't only want to hear what I play, but also see what I play. Therefor I wrote a little flash application which uses the only FlashMIDI Plug-in I found. It will be installed when the application runs for the first time. Now I've got the problem, that the plug-in crashes when I play too fast. Maybe it is a problem with my interface or midi configuration, but I guess, it is the plug-in itself. Cold you test it on your machines, please? I'm looking forward to any feedback.

This is how vZen looks like now:

The menu, the logos and the mouse pointer hide after some seconds. First you have to hit the programming button to start the programming sequence. vZen shows you a trigger, you have to hit. After that it is switching to the next trigger until you have programmed all of them. Now you can start playing. vZen will visualize your playing. These are the only features, I programmed right now, because the plug-in crashes when I play faster.

You can download the application here: http://www.dellwig.de/ingo/download/vZen-0.1.0-beta.zip Please let me know, if you can crash the plugin, too.

If I can fix this problem, I'll add the following features one by one:
- LT model support
- you will be able to use your own Zendrum photo
- the configuration can be saved
- set a maximum MIDI volume - when you play louder, the triggers will become red
- you will be able to see in several ways, how hard you hit the triggers
- I'll add fullscreen support
- many more - post your ideas and I'll think about them

But first: Tell me if it works on your PC.  ;)

Tech Help / Different hit behavior of some pads
« on: March 31, 2007, 12:19:41 PM »
I discovered a problem with my new Zendrum. I realized it when I was playing the first few notes, already:

Most of the Pads are OK. I can play very silent and get louder the harder I hit them, but some of the pads are dull. For the most quiet notes I have to hit the pads as hard as I need to hit the normal ones for a medium volume. To get the maximum volume, I have to hit the bad ones much harder than the good ones.

I told John at the Musikmesse about that and he said, I should press down the edges of the pads (of course not too hard). That didn't make it better.

Is that something that happened in the delivery week? Maybe condensation water, low temperature or sth. like that?

Ingo - loves the behavior of the good pads  ;)

ZenChat / Chairmod 4 Zendrummers
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:20:47 PM »
How to play Zendrum in an executive chair? Take a screwdriver and JUST DO IT! If customers ask: Just smile!

Ingo - can now practice in the office.

What can I do to make the time go by?
Any ideas?  ::)

I don't have a Zendrum, but... / MIDI hard-/software
« on: June 26, 2006, 02:15:56 PM »

I'm playing percussions since 1990. Sometimes I'm sad of transporting all the instruments. So I was looking for an electronic alternative. When I found Zendrum, I loved it immediately.  ;D My problem: I'm still a beginner with MIDI. When I did not miss anything, the Zendrum is a controller and needs any kind of additional MIDI hardware. I know that PC soundcards can play MIDI files, but I think I'll need additional software to play in realtime. Who can recommend any hard- or software (not to expensive for the beginning)?
