ZenChat / Re: December 50% off BFD2 and Eco Expansion Kits
« on: December 26, 2010, 03:09:00 AM »
I have had a brief play with BFD2.2 and am mightily impressed with the dimensions it adds to the Zen. Earlier, I also tried out BFDeco as well and found it to be a very easy entry into the world of VSTs.
I hope to do full user reviews of both of these - as well as the rival Toontrack offerings in future editions of digitalDrummer, but off the bat, I must say that the 50% off should be enough to encourage any doubters out there to have a try. And FXpanssion has some terrific videos which introduce the products and explain them. If you haven't seen the Zendrum ones by Mr Emrich, they are a real eye-opener

Thanks for your behind-the-scenes encouragement, Rand. One thing that has emerged is that I'm probably "over-enthusiastic" in my playing. I set a couple of triggers with crossfades and constantly trigger the bottom sound - so I'm clearly hitting too hard.
I'll try turning down the sensitivity and also work on a lighter touch.
Oh well, the learning curve continues.....

After battling with ZenEdit and two interfaces - a generic and a Roland/Cakewalk, I tried using an M-Audio MIDISPORT and succeeded first time - with a throttled back SysEx Librarian.
So, if in doubt, stick with the "approved" interfaces.
DW, you can add the MIDISPORT to the list!

Not quite what you asked, but I have tried with a Cakewalk/Roland UM-1G and a generic USB/MIDI cable and not succeeded with either. Both were fine receiving from the Zen - and are regularly used to send and receive between VDrumLib and a Roland TD20 module.

Anyone else having trouble sending sysex files to the Z4? I've tried using both Windows and Mac applications, but can't get the Zen to accept them. Tired a couple of different MID/USB cables and I know the system works because I've managed to get the Zen to export to my computer, but nothing the other way...

So, did this work out and are there any lessons for the rest of us?

Besides trying to master the Zendrum, last week I also tried to get my head around VSTs. I managed to load BFDeco and EZdrummer on my Dell notebook and hooked it up to the ZX using a USB-MIDI cable and  both worked almost perfectly out of the box. A few trigger assignments were not quite what I expected, but overall, it was fairly easy. Of course, I'm nowhere near doing the layering multi-sample triggering of which the Z4 is capable, but for anyone keen to take the VST route, I'd say: give it a go.
Next, I'd love to try and get some of the complexity John Emrich achieves on his videos - but that will take a bit of work.

Tech Help / Re: Anyone using their Zen with Roland's DT-HD1 Drum Tutor
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:16:32 PM »
You do still need a sound source of course.   Drum Tutor to the best of my knowledge does not produce any sound.  The typical usage of it is to have a Roland sound module (such as the HD-1) plugged into it.  Do you own a sound module that has both MIDI IN as well as OUT?  If so, the easiest route is probably to plug your zen into the module first, and then plug the module in to the PC.
Alternatively you could use a VST based source (such as your BFD Eco).  You might need to fiddle around with port sharing then though.  Depends on if either piece of software takes exclusive use of the MIDI port.
Of course, that makes sense. I was trying to avoid the module, but clearly it would be too fiddly to use BFD. So, to use my TD-20 module, I'd have to Zen MIDI OUT to TD-20 MIDI IN; TD-20 MIDI OUT to USB and USB MIDI IN to ZEN MIDI IN?

I'm using a UM-1G USB-MIDI adaptor, taking the MIDI out from my Merge brick and MIDI In to the Zen. The DT-HD1 appears to recognise the Zen as I get the "scores" when i hit correct notes - or miss them - but I can't hear any notes from the Zen or the DT-HD1. Any suggestions?
And slightly off-topic .... I've also connected the Zen to BFD eco for the first time and while everything appears corectly mapped, I am not really getting any dynamics at all from the program. And the machine-gunning is very noticeable. Are these common phenomena or sould I be getting better dynamics?

I'd be keen to try this, but haven't worked out how to get the DT-HD1 to reocgnise the Zen. Any connection tips and settings advice would be appreciated.

Hey Tom,
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but I accessed the stock Garageband kits and found them to be quite synthetic compared to say Roland or Yamaha module kits. Are there hidden kits tha I may have overlooked?
