Tech Help / Power switch replacement
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:11:05 am »
Hey guys! Long time no talk.
So I don't know if I'm the only one this has been happening to, but since I got my ZX, I have had an intermittent problem with bumping the power switch with my belt or hip and accidentally shutting off the power while practicing.

I've contemplated a few different solutions for this and I think what I may end up going with is replacing the current toggle switch with a push-button, such as http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/717130401/LED_push_button_switch.html.

The questions I have are probably best answered by the Inspector, but any insight is helpful. My main concern is to resolve this one way or another before it results in a switch-off at a very unfortunate time.

1) Will this void my instrument's warranty? My friend and I are both heavy tinkerers and are well-versed in modifications such as this, so skill is not an issue, but I understand not wanting to be responsible for third party modifications. Regardless of the solution, I need to get this sorted out, even if it's just making a physical barrier over the switch.

2) What are the dimensions of the existing switch and the hole it is mounted in? Is there any electronic equipment lying directly beneath the power switch? How much depth is there to work with below the backplate of the ZX? Obviously if I go the replacement switch route, I don't want to order one only to have it not fit. The one I linked above looks substantially deeper than the google searches I've done for comparisons to switches like the stock toggle.

3) For other people who have experienced this (if any), how did you overcome it?

Thanks for the ideas, guys!

Tech Help / MIDIJet Wireless MIDI lag time
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:50:17 pm »
Hey tribe,
As I work to get comfortable with my playing style on the ZX, I've noticed something that is throwing me off a little bit. It seems like there is a tiny bit of lag when playing over wireless. It's minute, probably measured in single-digit millisecond numbers, but noticable; the drum hits come a hair after my finger touches the pad.

Is this something anyone else has noticed? More importantly, those of you that gig with your Zendrums, is this something I should be worried about and go wired when I start playing shows? Could such a tiny difference throw off the rest of the band? Or should I just work on ignoring it, or (harder) adapt to it? It seems like a negligible amount, 1/100th of a second or less, but not having played as part of a band yet, I'm not sure if it's something I should concern myself with.

Thoughts?

ZenChat / On/Off Switch Cover
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:00:12 am »
So I'm noticing that even though the on/off switch is tucked in next to one of the rubber "feet" of my ZX, I'm still somehow accidentally bumping it more than I'm comfortable with (probably why so many of you don't have on/off switches any more).

I'm thinking of making some sort of cover for it. Something I can glue onto the backplate that can be flipped up when I want to use the switch, or possibly a cage I can reach through that will stay stationary. Either way, I've hit it by accident a few times already and I want to make sure that when I'm up on stage and performing, I don't jostle it.

Have any of you done something like this? Inspector, would this void my warranty or cause any issues?

Tech Help / ZX won't power on
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:08:42 pm »
For any of you night owl tribesmen...
Last night, my Z4 ZX worked just fine. Tonight, I picked it up to start practicing with it, and it won't power on off the old battery, off either of two fresh batteries, or wired through the Merge Brick. When I flip the switch, either the screen stays blank, or flashes a "18" or "1F" for half a second, then goes blank and doesn't respond to input.
Any ideas? Only had the thing a couple of months. :\ I really did not expect to be taking advantage of the warranty after such a short time... I'm hoping it's user error...

ZenChat / Zendrum with Electronic Music
« on: February 16, 2011, 04:33:56 pm »
Hey everybody,
I've taken the plunge and have ordered a ZX. :)

I wanted to get the opinions of some of you out there who have played more or are more familiar with the electronica genres of music. I'm involved in the futurepop, synthpop, and EBM music scenes (some examples of similar-sounding bands would be VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Apoptygma Berzerk, Neuroticfish, and Seabound).

I'll be playing my Zendrum primarily through a laptop with Battery 3 and Native Instruments Komplete, which from what I've seen has a great range of drum samples to use. However, I've seen enough laptop and hardware failures on stage and just before shows to know that a backup is ALWAYS advisable.

So, for those of you who know this style of music, what standalone drum modules would you recommend that have excellent realism and broad dynamic in their samples, that also offer some more electronic-sounding drum sounds?

Thanks for your advice on this!
-Mike

I don't have a Zendrum, but... / Zendrum demo in Chicagoland area?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:54:11 pm »
Hello everyone,
I am an aspiring drummer and am considering purchasing a Zendrum.
What I was wondering is, does anyone on this message board live in the Chicago area, and would you be willing to demo the controller for me? I would like to get a feel for the instrument before I plunk down a couple of thousand dollars for it.

Please email me at chaosmonk [at] hotmail dot com if you are available to show off your toy.

Thanks everyone!

-Mike
