Greetings Tribe.

I have a clinic coming up at the Clive Davis School for Recording at NYU.  I am going to be using BFD2 and my buddy Matty Amendola was kind enough to put together some tracks that we originally did at an AES show.  I went ahead and put together a quick video of this remote session and you can check it out by clicking on the following link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6u8KwbyEhE&list=UUCHOHZD8g-VOv98LpC43waQ&index=1&feature=plcp

I encourage everyone to to start recording videos and posting.  It is a good way for the tribe to gain new ideas!

ZenChat / Zendrum Forum
« on: April 10, 2012, 09:22:00 am »
Greetings fellow Zendrummers.

I thought that I would take a sec and post about this forum.  This is a great community and we have had a couple of idiots ruin our hang in the recent past.  As a result, Inspector 109 now adds the title of "bouncer" to his position.  No new members will be allowed to just "join" our community.  They will all need to go through David.

Everyone should take a sec and thank David for this.  He is putting all of the responsibility on his own shoulders.

Bottom line is this..... I encourage everyone to get back into this forum and start talking again.  This is a great resource and it should be supported by our activity.

Cheers,
John

Peter’s professional career started in 1972 when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He joined Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius in 1978. After four years and five albums with Weather Report and the Jaco Pastorius big band Word of Mouth, he joined Steps Ahead. His big band recordings with the Bob Mintzer Big Band are excellent modern big band jazz/funk performances studied by many students of drums and drumming. His music-style spanning talent also features on Kate Bush's 2005 album Aerial, where Erskine teams with bass player Eberhard Weber. Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, Queen Latifah and Linda Ronstadt among many more still choose Peter for his multifaceted musicality.

Today, Erskine splits his time as a musician and that of a professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.

ZenChat / NEW - BFD Cocktail Kit
« on: October 14, 2009, 12:15:18 pm »
BFD Cocktail is a BFD2-compatible expansion kit based on the Yamaha Hipgig portable drumkit. Developed in conjunction with world-renowned drummer Rick Marotta, the Hipgig kit is perfect for any style of music. The drums feature 7-ply birch/mahogany shells with a very dynamic and musical sound.

BFD Cocktail is recorded in the same room under the same studio conditions as the Jazz & Funk, B.O.M.B., JEX and Decatom expansions, as well as other Yamaha-based expansion kits. It has also been designed to sound great with BFD2's built-in library as well as with BFD libraries recorded in other locations.

BFD Cocktail includes the following kit-pieces:

Hipgig 6"x10" and 7"x13" toms (played with sticks)
Hipgig 20"x16" Kick Drum (played with rubber and felt beaters)
Hipgig 5"x12" Snare Drum (played with sticks and hot-rods)

New articulations include rim shots and rim clicks on the toms. The snare also offers rim clicks, with the stick version additionally offering flams, drags and the half-edge articulation which can be used with positional sensing on suitable electronic drumkits.

There are no hihats or cymbals included with this expansion kit. All presets are designed around BFD2 hats and cymbals and can be easily set up to play with electronic drumkits such as the Yamaha DTXtreme series using BFD2's mapping functionality.

BFD Cocktail was recorded at Omega Studios in Rockville, MD. All drums feature Remo Heads: Coated Ambassador (snare and toms) and Renaissance Powerstroke 3 (kick).

ZenChat / Fine tune the Z4 Triggers!
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:18:54 pm »
Hello all,

I was messing around with the PL function in the new Z4 and something occurred to me.  The C2 parameter is meant as a way to train each pad.  The first time I did this, I just hit each pad once with my first finger on my right hand.  That was a mistake!

Many of you play like I do with different parts of the hands on different triggers.  The better way to set this function up is to get into the C2 parameter and play naturally for a little while.  You will not hear anything, but your will be addressing each pad the real way that you hit them.  This will result in a much better playing instrument.

Think about the differences between your left and right hand.  Now add the different parts of each finger that you use.  These all add up to a wide variety of different pressure levels when striking the triggers.  By "air drumming" you just need to hit each pad the way that you do when you perform.  The difference in results will surprise you.  It really does make a big difference.

Thought I'd pass this along.  It does help and the new Z4 will respond perfectly.

ZenChat / BFD Signature Snares Vol. 1
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:14:34 am »
FXpansion is proud to present a collection of Yamaha artist signature snares for your BFD2 library. With the usual high levels of detail, multiple channels and multiple articulations, BFD Signature Snares Vol.1 is ready for you to sequence and mix using BFD 2.1's powerful software interface.

The snares are captured in the same room as the previous Yamaha expansion kits and the Jazz & Funk, Percussion and B.O.M.B expansion packs, in Omega Studios, Rockville, MD, USA. The tight, precise and very edrummer friendly sound makes them great when combined with any kit-pieces in the BFD library.

BFD v2.1's support for custom articulations allows these snares to offer 'rim clicks' in addition to the standard snare articulations, as well as positional sensing when used with electronic drums.

Roy Haynes Signature Snare Drum (14" x 5.5")
The sound of jazz great Roy Haynes is embodied in this hand-hammered copper shell snare. With a versatile, refined tone, the snare is recorded with sticks and brushes, as well as using mallets with the snare strainer off.
Played with:
- Sticks (strainer on and off)
- Brushes (strainer on and off)
- Mallets (strainer off)

Bamboo Snare Drum (14" x 6.5")
Paper-thin sheets of bamboo are used to create single plies, six of which are used to form perfectly round shells with Yamaha's original "Air-Seal System". The result is a remarkably beautiful shell that produces a warm tone full of low-end.
Played with:
- Sticks (strainer off)

FHP (fibreglass) Snare Drum (14" x 6")
A precursor to the FRP range, the FHP's fibreglass material permits the utilisation of thinner 3mm shells, which deliver a fat, dynamic sound with excellent playing response.
Played with:
- Sticks (strainer on and off)
- Hot rods (strainer on and off)

Dave Weckl Signature Model (14" x 5")
One of a series of Dave Weckl signature snares featuring a dual-strainer design, this steel-shell model possesses a unique sound and 'crack'.
Played with:
- Sticks (strainer on)
- Brushes (strainer on)

Mike Bordin Signature Model (14" x 6.5")
With a partially hand-hammered 2mm copper shell, this snare features a thick, dark tone. With the power to cut through loud mixes, the snare also exudes enough warmth and sensitivity for almost any musical application.
Played with:
- Sticks (strainer on)

Availability & Pricing

BFD Signature Snares Vol.1 is a download-only product and is available now from the FXpansion web shop!

ZenChat / New BFD2 Expansion - Yamaha Oak
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:33:13 am »
Hello,

I am pleased to announce a new expansion pack that I have produced for FXPansion's BFD2 platform.

BFD Oak Custom Expansion Kit features a high-end Yamaha Oak Custom drum kit and Bamboo snare.

Oak Custom 8"x10" Tom
Oak Custom 9"x12" Tom
Oak Custom 10"x13" Tom
Oak Custom 14"x14" Floor Tom
Oak Custom 16"x16" Floor Tom
Oak Custom 17"x24" Bass Drum
Yamaha Bamboo 6"x14" Snare Drum

Remo Heads
Snare - Coated Ambassador
Toms - Coated Emperor
Bass Drum - Powersonic

Oak is a great material for a drum shell: it resonates with a solid fundamental delivering awesome power when played. Consequently, the toms sound very full-bodied and the bass drum offers a devastating low-end response.

This download-only BFD v2.1 expansion kit includes toms played with sticks, mallets, and rods. The bass drum is provided in both wood and felt beater versions. The snare is played with sticks, and provided with the snare-strainer on and off.  New v2.1 articulations include 'rim shots' and 'rim clicks' on the toms (when hit with sticks). The snare also offers 'rim clicks' in addition to its standard articulations, as well as support for positional sensing when used with electronic drums.

In order to complete this set, a new 'lite' (16-velocity layers) Yamaha Bamboo snare in included. Its crack and strong tone make it very easy to place in a mix.  There will be two massive snare packs released at a later date that include all of the snares recorded at this session.  In total there are 10 snares, eight of which are artist series drums!

As an additional bonus, Yamaha Oak Custom comes complete with free cases! Useful for percussion or experimental drum-layering, these kit-pieces are created from recordings of the Yamaha drum cases being played with sticks. Recordings of the 10", 12", 14", and 24" drum cases are provided.

Also included with the download is a DTXtremeIII MIDI Map and .t3a Alldata file to make the DTXtremeIII electronic drum set plug and play with BFD2.

BFD Yamaha Oak Custom is GBP £25, Euro €35, USD $50 for all registered BFD2 owners

You can check out the audio demos and get more information at - http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=81
