Title: Maryland Get Together
Post by: Pyrate on February 02, 2007, 01:23:20 PM
Avast Thar Mateys!!

I am planning a get together for the local Zendrummers in Maryland, DC, Virginia and wherever else anyone wishes to travel from.  Right now, I only have the date and general location selected,.  I have selected Saturday, 24 February 2007 as the date and the Annapolis, Maryland area for location (as it is the home area of not just yours truly but the Tribes own Mr. Wizard) (so I be a bit selfish, so sue me).   I am open to suggestions in the Annapolis area for a specific spot to meet and as to whether or not such a place would allow us to bring our various and sundry equipment.  I have also not set a specific time yet either.

Watch this space for further info as it develops.  Please RSVP to this subject if you intend to attend.

Fair Winds and Follwoing Seas,
Pyrate

Man,  I would have loved to meet with you guys  (and particularly with John E.--  I'm so tempted by the fruits of the software based sounds)....  but I'l be in Vermont that weekend...   keep us posted as to how it goes/went,  and when another one might come together!

Hey you guys. If John E and Mike Farell, AKA drumhead 99, are ever in the same place, I want to be there too. I'm in Atlanta Georgia and I want to get together with these people to learn and exchange info. Because of John E, I have been researching that Muse Receptor and BFD software. Very interesting. I am getting tired of disconnecting my Roland TD-20 module from the kit to go places and then rewiring it. I would also be interested if anyone has purchased the V-expressions expansion for the TD-20 module and if they like it. Keep up the chat. You people ROCK !!! Dr. Shark

Dr. Shark:

I bought a couple of the early VXpression kits for the TD-20.  Once I got "under the covers," I soon realized that they are just tweaked sounds already in the module.  With a bit of patience and reading the manual, I learned how to control/adjust the various COSM parameters and never needed any additional kits.   If you don't have the interest in learning about trigger settings/parameters, EQ, ambience, compression, et al., then the VXpression kits will come in handy.  With a modest amount of learning and fiddling, though, you can get the same or better results on your own.   If you have any questions, feel free to ask away...

Thank you kbour. I also added two more toms and another symbol and will use the last of my aux with another symbol and it would probly be worthless to spend the money to get the v-expression expansions. I will wait for Roland to come out with the new board. Dr Shark

I've got to agree with Ken --  I bought the early VExpressions that came out for the TD-20--   and It's really just tweaking of the module.   Don't get me wrong--  they do a nice job of it.  But if you are a tweaker yourself,  then I think you can get similar  (or even better) results that suit your needs.   For the non-tweaker--    I think the Vexpressions is a really great option.

I think I am giving BFD a test drive tonight--  which means-  uh-oh..   probably going to be a movement over to the sortware side of things if things go the right way.  I've been really checking out/studying "the Freddy" receptor,  and I am just so intrigued by the BFD/sampled sounds...

to Dr. Shark --   thanks for the compliment and hopefully at some point our/fellow Zendrummers schedules will allow us to be playing/sharing info with each other at some point.

Avast thar Mateys!!!

Many of you have expressed interest in not only getting together, but also bringing your rigs and Zendrums.  I have put much brain power (with what few brain cells still live wihin the confines of my skull and crossbones, Har Har).  The community in which I reside has a clubhouse available.  The cost for 6 hours of misadventure is $175.00.  If those of you planning on attending this event of the season are willing to share in the cost, I will happily make the arrangements.  If on the other hand you find such a cost prohibitive, then I would suggest meeting at an appropriate eating/drinking establishment to swap sea stories and zendrum tips.  However, such a solution precludes bringing in our marvelous instruments.

    So what say ye?

Fair Winds and Following Seas,
Pyrate

Pyrate:

Thanks for doing the research!  I wouldn't mind sharing in the cost.  If we get 5 attendees, it's only $25/head.  BTW, that sounds like a perfect number if we're actually going to try and play/experiment/share with instruments.

Avast thar Mateys!!!  The Maryland get together is still a go (although a few more shanghiaed into the crew would be good for me morale (as well as me wallet).  Also I would appreciate it if any of ye fine sailors will be bringing your first mates with you (so I can count heads vs. fingers).  The clubhouse at Queens Landing in Chester, MD will be the location on Saturday 24 Feb 2007, from 1600 to 2200 (that's 4PM to 10 PM for you land lubbers).  I will provide directions shortly.

To the best of my knowledge I should make it. Looking forward to it.  Am I guessing that this will accomodate everyones "set-ups"?  Has anyone establsihed what we will be doing or is it just going to be a "wing-it" kind of day? Either is fine. Take care and stay safe, Mark

Avast Thar Mateys,

There has been a slight change to the Maryland get together.  Since only a few folks have responded, I have decided to slightly change the venue. Instead of the community clubhouse, I will host this grand event in my living room.  If you look at the link I provided earlier, you will note that all of the buildings are numbered.  I am in building number 1, unit C.  When you come into the neighborhood, look for the black Corvette with US Navy plates from the State of Florida.  Park your car opposite that Corvette.  Walk back towards the Corvette and knock on the front door to Unit 1C.  Bring your Zendrum and merge box and cables.  You can leave the rest of your rig at home.  The Tribal Wizard has graciously agreed to provide some of his equipment and of course I willl provide mine (such as it is).

Mr. Wizard and I thought it would be fun to have a "zendrum in the round" since my massive couch is L-shaped.  We intend to record this joint jam session, and photos will be taken.  There will also be a small amount of food (cold cuts and a vegetable plate), courtesy of me fine first mate.

All in all, I think this is the best solution.  It will save us some money (as I won't have to rent the community clubhouse.  However the downside is that we will also have to start somewhat earlier (about 1500) and end a little earlier (about 1930).  On the upside, there are many fine eating establishments here on the island, and we will all be able to eat our fill at the end of the evening.  A fine ending to a wonderful day.

Hopefully these minor changes will not inconvenience anyone.

Fair Winds and Following Seas,
Pyrate

P.S. THe first mate will require shoes off while in the living room.

Avast Thar Mateys,

The First Maryland Get Together is now over.  For those of you scurvy dogs that didn't care to join us, I will have to confine you to the brig or to Davey Jone's Locker (and believe me his sweaty gym socks are rather rank by now).

It was great.  Mr. Wizard gave us all a copy of his old CD.  He also showed off his new laptop.  Mr. Push Start (aka Mike Render) brought Official Ohio Buckeye goodies to share.

Me first mate created a table of food worthy of a Pyrate Crew (minus the Grog).

We all learned from each other.  It was a very good sharing experience and one that I hope will be repeated.  (David and Kim; are you taking notes).

I will be posting pictures in a day or so.

All I can say is, it was a gathering of a great bunch of guys and a good time was had by all.  Ya shoulda been here!

I would like to thank Pyrate and his better half for openning their home to us.  This first official Zendrummer day was a blast.

Things learned:
1. Michael is truly a unique musician with a real gift for spontaneous vocals.

2. Mark has some of the fastest fingers I've seen in a long time.

3. Pyrate is a one of a kind, a true champion for everything Zendrum.

This was a lot of fun and I hope that it opens doors for more Zendrum get togethers in the future.

Good Evening All !

To echo everyone else a good time was had by all. Many thanks, to Pyrate and his wife for their hospitality. John thanks for the kind words on my playing.

What did I learn...?

- When I get the money BFD and a MUSE Receptor!!  To see and hear it up close does not do the videos justice.

-  I learned how to "lock" the Zendrum so you don't accidentally change your trigger settings.  Hold both "arrow" buttons at the same time until a red LED come on.

- No two playing styles are alike but all have the same intentions of delivering a musical message.

- Last but not least... it need to happen AGAIN!!

Tonight was very informal but very informative.  With greater numbers we can all benefit and learn ALOT MORE!  Mike drove down from Ohio, so... enough said.

Anyway, just my $.02 Take care and stay safe, Mark!

I learned that driving home through Pennsylvania can be dangerous. I hiot a patch of ice in the mountains. I did a desperate 360 trying not to go over the side into the valley. I pulled the car out of the spin only to have it do another 180 the other direction. The cement divider stopped me from going further. I am very shaken, but not hurt. The poor Render-Mobile has seen better days.

The gathering was a blast. It was almost embarassing being in the same room as firemusician and the Wizard; they are seriously talented. And I never expected a guy called Pyrate could be such a gracious and giving person.

Little known facts about Pyrate:
He really lives near the ocean.
He really has a boat.
You have to go down Marina Road and Anchor Lane to get to his house.
He doesn't actually have an eye patch and he doesn't say "Avast"... much.

So who wants to go to the one in Akron, OH?

Hey Guys,
What a rock n roll adventure of a road trip.
I'm glad you all made it home alive!
Michael, I hope you get the ride straightened out soon.
Still drivable I hope?

Chris DeHaas is down here visiting with me from Cleveland this weekend.
He said he hadn't seen the sun in weeks and he's flying right back into the winter mess tomorrow. All y'all need to move down here and live with us Hicks in Georgia where its 70 degrees today!
I know it would be a culture shock for you folks, but you wouldn't freeze your butts off all winter.
I don't see how you do it every year. Everybody freaks out down here if they see one snowflake come out of the sky and then they go out and buy up all the bread and milk at the store!!!
Hilarious...

I think its great you all took the initiative and made the strong effort to have this powwow.
Sounds like a very cool story to tell-
Kudos to each one of you, AND
Thank you Pyrate and (most especially) to your Better Half!

Hey Guys:

I am just now surfacing from some unanticipated, but intense, corporate issues.  Being the CEO, they required my personal involvement.  I ended up in the office all day for the last two weekends; thus, I had to miss this inaugural event.   It sounds like the four of you had a great time together.  Sorry to hear about the accident, Michael, but I'm glad that you survived it in one piece.   Nice driving!

If there is interest in a repeat, I would certainly be willing to host the next session at my home in northern VA.  I have a pretty nice music studio that could comfortably handle 5 or so musicians and I have the requisite gear [22 port mixer console, JBL EON G2 stage speaker system w/ 18" sub, recording capability, full V-Drum set, Musser concert vibraphone (John!), Yamaha P-90 digital piano, etc].   I currently use a TD-20 to trigger ZD sounds, but I'm sure we could hook up other modules.

Maybe this summer circa June or July?
